Ben Turns One

cc
cc
Sam helped assemble and set-up Ben’s birthday toys last night before going to bed. Of course, he had to sample each one as he was placing it in the appropriate place.

This morning when Ben awoke I don’t think he had a clue what all the fuss was about. Regardless, he had a great time all day playing with his new toys & drinking his big boy whole milk (Sam was thrilled by this) from a sippy cup.

This afternoon, Sam helped me make cupcakes for Ben. I wanted white cups, Sam wanted Diego. Of course, it didn’t matter but we settled for half of each style. While Sam waited patiently for them to cook & cool….we went outside to play. After a few minutes it started to rain so I put Sadie inside while I dried the boys off. If you know Sadie, you know what she did. That bad, bad girl ate all but one (how kind of her to leave one for Ben’s Birthday Celebration) cupcake.

Tonight after Ben blew out the candle on his cupcake, we cut the cupcake in half for the boys. Ben took one look at the cupcake and immediately threw it on the floor (I’m still laughing about it). Sam, on the other hand, meticulously put sprinkles on his portion and then ate it quickly.

HAPPY 1ST BIRTHDAY, BEN! I hope you had a memorable first year of your life.

Do You Not Like Our Singing?

Ben wasn’t too thrilled with our rendition of “Happy Birthday” tonight.
I really hope he had a great birthday anyway!

(P.S. Turn down the volume before you watch this video. My singing is loud and off key.)

Happy 1st Birthday, Ben!

Wow! Was it really a year ago today that Ben woke us up in the middle of the night to say he was ready to be born? I still remember calling Deta around 1am to ask her to come watch Sam so we could make our way to St. Luke’s hospital. Many hours later (and a little assistance from our fabulous OB, Dr. Dryden) we welcomed our second son into the world.

As Scott and I glanced through the pictures from the past year, it’s hard to believe how far he’s come. Hurricane Ike blew through Houston when Ben was only 2 weeks old and we should have known from that experience what a “go with the flow” child he would be. He’s eaten anything and everything that has ever been put in front of him (even eggs that poisoned him) and has cut a record 10 (6 at once) teeth in his short life. He’s blown through the growth charts and pleased his mother like you wouldn’t believe by having his 1st word be “mama”. He had the most unique crawl I’ve ever witnessed (spider baby!) and has drawn in strangers with his smile from the earliest days.

I love observing him from a distance especially when he’s playing with Sam. He’s so curious, determined & engaged in how things work…and boy does he love and look up to his big brother!

Ben is such a BRIGHT star in our life.

We love & adore you sweet & gentle Ben. We look forward to seeing where life takes you!

Pool Time in the Backyard

cc
cc
We’re trying hard to keep cool in this heat. There’s nothing like a baby pool and a Diego sprinkler to pass the time on a hot Summer day.

SUPER Sam!

Sam made a wonderful mask today at art camp (week 2). He was SO proud of it and I think I smiled for at least an hour after seeing how happy he was in the mask.

Of course, the first thing we had to do after he got in the car from camp was race home and put on his Superman cape. SUPER Sam!

Frankenbaby

Ben continues to make huge improvements in walking after only a week. He’s got amazing balance especially as Sam & Sadie are bouncing around him. The best part is how he holds his hands out in front as he walks around like Frankenstein. We love our little Frankenbaby!!!

Never too old to learn - Palestine man receives Master of Science degree at 62

By CHERIL VERNON
The Palestine Herald

PALESTINE — It’s never too late to go back to school.

Terry Wayne Lindsey of Palestine received his Master of Science degree in Criminal Justice Leadership and Management from Sam Houston State University in Huntsville on Aug. 8.

At 62, he was the oldest person out of more than 1,100 students who received their degrees that day.

“During graduation, they were talking about demographics saying the age range was from 19 to 62, talking about the different countries and states besides Texas the students graduating were from,” Lindsey said. “I realized when they said ‘62’ they were talking about me.”

But Lindsey doesn’t consider himself “old” — far from it, in fact. It was just the right time in his life to do something he wanted to do.

“I don’t really feel different (than other students) and I don’t really feel old,” Lindsey said. “I’m just me.”

Lindsey works as an operational review sergeant at the Texas Department of Criminal Justice’s Coffield Unit, where he has been employed for the past 15 years.

“I got to thinking that as I get older I may not be able to physically work in a prison,” Lindsey said. “But I could teach criminal justice.”

Lindsey said he procrastinated for a couple of years until he saw his sister-in-law go through a similar program to receive her degree.

“I decided if she could do it, I could do it,” Lindsey said.

Lindsey is a 1966 graduate of Palestine High School and received an associate’s degree from Henderson County Junior College in 1968. After serving in the U.S. Army for two years, Lindsey returned to college graduating in 1981 from the University of Texas at Tyler with a bachelor’s degree in business management. He was the first person in his family to get a college degree.

“After college I worked for a lot of different places — the oilfield and in business for myself for a while,” Lindsey said. “Then I went to TDCJ and I’m still there. It’s been a good job for me. I’ve put two kids through college while I was there.”

In fact, TDCJ awarded Lindsey with a scholarship for part of his tuition. But Lindsey said he would not have been able to commit to the two-year, weekends-only special master’s degree program at Sam Houston without the help of his boss, TDCJ Coffield Unit Warden Ray Thompson.

“He guaranteed I’d be off on the weekends that I needed to go to class,” Lindsey said. “I absolutely could not have done this weekend program without his help.”

Lindsey’s class originally started with 19 students in August 2007. Only seven graduated.

“Hurricane Ike made it a tough deal for a couple of the students who had to drop out. One was a police officer in Galveston and another was a police officer in Houston,” Lindsey said. “After the hurricane, they couldn’t recover their work schedule to do the program.”

The special master’s degree program met every third weekend with one class all day Saturday and one class all day Sunday. There were no breaks between semesters.

“In the last two semesters they took pity on us and we met once a month,” Lindsey said.

Being master-degree level classes, the courses were intense.

“I had eight books and we only met five times a semester per class so you had a lot to learn on your own,” Lindsey said. “When you came to class you had to be ready at 8 a.m. to take a test each time.”

Most people in his class were 20 years his junior and he was the only one who was a correctional officer. The rest were law enforcement.

“I was from Palestine, there were three from Bryan-College Station, one from Houston and one from San Antonio that graduated,” Lindsey said. “We were a cohesive group that became wonderful friends because we’ve spent the last two years together.

Lindsey said he studied about two to three hours a day in addition to working full-time at the prison. But the last two years haven’t been easy. He’s missed grandchildren’s birthday parties, hunting trips and vacations with his wife.

But it all will be worth it in the long run, Lindsey said. Because school is about to start, Lindsey said he plans to look for teaching jobs that will open up in January when a new semester begins.

Now that “school is out” for Lindsey, it’s time to play catch up with his family and the things he enjoys doing.

“I’m sure my wife and boss are both glad it’s over,” Lindsey said. “I couldn’t have done it without both of their support.”

His wife, Fran Eilenberger Lindsey, is owner of Oasis Travel and plans to take her husband on a cruise in the near future — something he hasn’t been able to do for a while because of his studies.

“Now that I can rest some, I want to enjoy time with my family, go to see my grandchildren and do a little fishing, hunting and traveling,” Lindsey said.

Lindsey also looks forward to reading a book for enjoyment instead of for studying.

“Going back to school was worth it. I am a big proponent of education,” Lindsey said. “I like to encourage others to go back to school. It’s never to late.”

Lindsey is the son of Ruth Lindsey and the late TJ Lindsey of Palestine. He and his wife have a son, Arlen Lindsey of Arlington and daughter, Anna Lindsey Sheehan of Houston; and four grandchildren, Van and Bella Lindsey and Sam and Ben Sheehan. All of his family members attended his graduation ceremony.

Ben, I'm NOT Laughing!

Ben wants to hold onto Sam’s shirt and have Sam “walk” him all over the house. It doesn’t matter what Sam is playing with or riding on, when Ben is ready to walk…he just latches on and expects to go!

Sometimes Sam obliges and is calm about it, sometimes Sam obliges for 30 seconds and then conveniently lets Ben fall to the floor, & sometimes Sam just can’t tolerate it at all!

I think the face in this picture shows you which one Sam is thinking at the time. And I especially love the picture because Ben has NO clue!

Look Into The Light

cc

Sam has gone in and out of love with flashlights. But ever since Scott showed him how to make shadow puppets on the wall at night, his fascination (and obsession) has grown. Now we just need to teach him how not to shine it in our eyes!

I Never Would Have Guessed...Sam LOVES Art Camp!

cc
cc
When I found out that we would be moving into a new house, and school would be out for 2 weeks at the beginning of the move, I decided I needed to find something for Sam to do. A friend told me about an art camp in West U. I was a little skeptical of it holding Sam’s attention, but I signed him up with 2 of his buddies and hoped for the best. We’re only on day two…but he’s created some truly great pieces. A t-shirt decorated with paint & sandpaper, a treasure box & an adorable picture frame with his camp friends. I can’t tell you happy I am that he loves it and that he’s excited to go back tomorrow! Stay tuned for more pictures of his creations!

Patience Is Never Overrated

cc

Sam doesn’t get enough credit for being patient with Ben. He’s trying his best to “help” Ben walk all over the house these days. You can just see in Sam’s face how he’s ready for his brother to walk, run, play and wrestle with him. Soon…Sam…soon…

And...he's off!!!

cc

Two weeks shy of his first birthday, Ben is walking. Well, he still prefers to crawl (or grab onto the back of Sam’s shirt and have him navigate) but he’s getting more and more confident about letting go. Last week he would take a step here and there…and now he’s up to 5-6 steps. We’re so proud. Go Ben!

Final Days on W Cottage Street

cc
cc
We had a great mom of twins take some family pictures of us the last weekend that we lived at 723 W Cottage Street. She was great with the boys (even though Ben was a bit fragile during the picture taking process) and I think we ended up with some great pictures that truly show the boys’ personalities. Here are some of my personal favorites!

Paw Paw, Congrats On The Masters Degree!

cc

cc
Yesterday, my Dad received his Master’s Degree from Sam Houston State University. He’s worked hard for 2 years to get to this moment. His entourage was huge with too many family & friends to name them all on this page. And since we’re a lively, out spoken bunch, I don’t think any of us were surprised when they called out “Terry Wayne Lindsey” and we cheered louder than any other group in attendance. I think we all felt proud during that moment!

Following graduation, we went back to Deta’s house and celebrated in true Lindsey fashion with beer, BBQ & a melted cupcake cake (okay…maybe that part isn’t tradition…but I’m trying to make myself feel better about leaving a beautiful cake in the car for an hour when it’s 105 degrees outside…oops). Congrats Dad/Paw Paw!!!! We were so, so proud to watch you cross the stage!

Our New Home @ 3702 Durness Way

cc
cc
After a weekend full of moving, organizing, cleaning and more moving (thanks Mom for all your hard work) we’re finally getting to a good point in our new home. POD #1 and #2 left this morning (Sam supervised their work as usual) and the new furniture arrived this afternoon (one couch only fit after the guys removed 2 doors).
cc
We love our new home and know that we will have many, many happy memories here!

We Love Florida!

cc
While we were “homeless” last week, we met our great friends (Lindsay, Lee, Maston, Minor & Bowen Ballew) in Florida for a week. To say we had a great time in Seaside, Seashore & Rosemary Beach, Florida would be an understatement. While we drove our 620+ miles home…Scott, Sam & I reminisced about the week. Below are the highlights through all of ours eyes.
  1. Seeing the tugboats out our hotel window in Mobile, Alabama (this highlight was after we drove 450 miles in an afternoon after packing up a POD that morning)
  2. Sam boogie boarding for the first time in the ocean
  3. The boys (Maston & Sam) swimming on noodles at our neighborhood pool
  4. Watching all the boys (minus Bowen) play in the water fountains at Rosemary Beach
  5. Eating million dollar ice cream in Seaside
  6. Lindsay & I trying to catch fish in the ocean for the older boys for 20 minutes only to have a teenager take pity on us and catch one in less than a minute
  7. Seeing the excitement on the boys faces as they played with sparklers on the beach at sunset
  8. Embracing the outdoor shower
  9. Sam sharing a room with Maston and Minor....and wrestling into the night
  10. Ben and Bowen sleeping in Pack N Plays in the closets
  11. Sam napping with Scott each afternoon (wow…it sounds like we did a lot of sleeping!)
  12. Exploring the neighboring towns while the boys were napping (thanks Lindsay & Lee)
  13. Abby…our fabulous babysitter!!!
  14. Poor Ben’s face swelling up in Mobile after eating eggs (bad MOM!)
  15. Making glasses out of pipe cleaners in the car
  16. Getting to spend a week in paradise with great friends and rowdy boys
We can’t wait to do it again next year!
